Mise-en-scene blog task

1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.
In this still image, the main character seems to be the man in the suit as he has a straight body posture which also connotes that he is a confident individual. The man has his head up and is looking straight, this connotes that he fears no one. The blue tie the main character wearing connotes confidence, authority and intelligence. The main character is looking confident and authoritative despite the fact that there are several individuals staring at him angrily. This may suggest that the main character is the protagonist and the people surrounding him are the antagonists. The type of shot that is used in this still image is a medium-shot. The medium shot was used to the audience can see what environment the characters are in and whats going on. In this case it shows that the train doors are closing and there are people on the left and right on the main character and they are staring at him aggressively. This could also connote that the main character is trapped with them forever even if he is trying to escape from them and it looks like the people on the left and right want something from the main character as they are looking at him aggressively. The colours used in this image are quite dull, this connotes power, fear, mystery and death. The female that is on the right of the main character and a hint of red in their outfit which could suggest that maybe there is some romance going on with the main character and the female on the right.



2) Find three film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blog post and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.



Action Trailer
In this trailer, a lot of the scenes are taken place during the night. At night is when crime and violence takes place the most. The colour black connoted danger, mystery, aggression and death. These are all associated with things that can take place during the night and in action it happens very often.
The props that were used in this trailer is a gun. A gun is used to often kill people and in the trailer is shows that the main characters were at a funeral which could allow the audience to infer that the gun was used to kill the girl. Another prop that was used in this trailer is a mask. The mask is often used to disguise someone's identity and in this action trailer it shows that the mans face was disguised because he was doing something illegal/ against the law.
Horror Trailer
In this film trailer, a lot of the scenes that are taken place in the dark. The colour black connotes death, mystery and fear. This is perfect for a  horror film because the first thing they'd want is their audience to feel scared. In the trailer there was a shot in a forest. There was a long shot of the forest panning forward to emphasise how big the forest is. A forest is where people often go missing therefore it could connote mystery and potential danger. In this film trailer, there was a shade on red on the text. The colour red connotes blood, fire and danger. In horror films there are often people that are getting killed and that are in danger.



Comedy Trailer
In this film trailer there are bright colours that are used e.g. Yellow. The colour yellow connoted optimism, joy and enlightenment. The actors in this film trailer are dancing when they got their first arrest. The clearly illustrates that they are enlightened by their first arrest however when they get sent to a high school undercover, they start taking drugs. The costume they used is causal so they blend in with the other high school students. The lighting in this film trailer is bright throughout the trailer and is mostly taken place during the day. The setting in the beginning was in a park, this connotes happiness and joy.

Analyse Poster

In this film poster, the red title 'Blade Runner' connotes aggression, death and danger. The central image of the man shows that he was a prop in his hand which is a gun. The use of a gun connotes violence along with crime. The lighting of this film poster is dark themed and illustrates danger.
Furthermore, this film poster can be identified as a sci-fi film poster as you can see a spaceship or some sort flying above the building towards the sky.

In this film poster, the red title 'Scary Movie' connotes danger, death and violence. As you can see in the central image there is a female on the right holding a sign "I love dead people". This clearly illustrates that this movie is about death and could also link with danger. The tagline "More merciless" tells the audience that the characters have no sympathy in the film. The central image is seen as frightening and scary as the images are not appealing. The bottom of the poster is dark. This could've been done so the frightening central image of the characters stand out to scare the audience.

From the long shot of the central image, I can interpret that this film poster could be about a man who is stranded and isolated. The use of the grey clouds can emphasise depression and a dull meaningful movie which can be touching for the audiences. The reflection of the water connotes that the man is reflecting his life and his losses that he could've potentially made. The location that he is standing in looks like something has been demolished and you can see factories in the distance therefore the man could've lost his job which has caused him to be depressed.


From the central image, I can perceive that the boy is worried and concerned by something he see's in the hole. The dark hole connotes death and mystery so from this I can apprehend that there may be someone in the hole that the boy is concerned about. In the title, if you look closely you can see that there are faces of people. This could mean they are memories of dead people that could've fallen in the deep mysterious hole.


In this Film poster, the red title "Sin City" connotes danger, death and violence. The word "Sin" is often related with something bad someone has done and in this case it could be that someone has potentially murdered a rival. As you can see the central image is holding a prop which is a gun in his hand and the character next to him is pointing the gun at someone else. The film poster is dark themed. The dark theme could relate with fear, mystery and violence.

The first thing that catches my attention is the pirate and the prop that he's holding which is a gun and the gun that he's holding links to the sub heading of this film poster " Dead Man's Chest" because the pirate might be the person who murdered the owner of the chest. Below the title you can see some people who may be stranded. These people could be the owner of the chest which the pirate killed. The genre could be action and mystery.


From this film poster, I can interpret that it could be associated with love and romance. The woman is wearing a red dress which is often associated with love and romance. The colour blue connotes happiness and positivism. The people in the background are celebrating this moment of joy of two people in the central image are from different cultures are getting married. I can tell that they are from different cultures because on the right side of the photo at the background is a temple. On the left side you can see buildings and palm trees which tells us that they are from different locations.

In this film poster, the central image is a female. The female as seen as a muscular person. On the left and right you can faintly see two guys. This could suggest that the woman is after the two guys who could've potentially kidnapped a baby as the title of the film is "Million Dollar Baby". The colour theme of this film poster is dark which could connote death, aggression and mystery. The colour black also connotes power and authority which is clearly seen through the central image.
